Being first to market - new products

The company

MachineMax, a revolutionary IoT & data platform transforming industries through intelligent insights

The problem

The commercial construction market is reliant on the rental of state of the art heavy good off road equipment. These machines cost anywhere between £100,000 and £2,000,000 new, and cost thousands to run and maintain each year. Despite this cost, there are very few ways to track usage and optimise it due to lack of data availability.

The goal

Work with rental companies to drive change in the construction industry, building a healthy dependency of reliable data to drive decisions around optimised production and sustainability.

Discovery

Working with; internal stakeholders, customers, and industry experts to define the needs and the potential solutions

  • Workshops, discovery and co-designing sessions with the 3 largest rental companies in the UK and the largest rental aggregate in the US to identify the current state and how as a community, we could optimise operations across an industry worth $15.2 trillion.

  • Working with construction contractors and experts in the field to identify who, what and how they need information to achieve their goals of on-time delivery and  net zero.

See the some of the outcomes here in an Invision board I created as a way to document and share findings with the business. These documents are made available to everyone to encourage greater depths of understanding of our customer needs even in non customer facing roles.

Some Considerations

  • Does our existing tech stack support the requirements?

  • Complex relationships between businesses requires multi layer authentication to enable data sharing but ensure data security

  • Huge amount of inconsistent data from multiple data sources. To prepare the data for future use cases (specifically ML), we must not only aggregate and normalise it but we must be a structured and labelled database

  • New customer type with new customer needs therefore a modular approach to the product build would enable a single product with multiple use cases as we continue to grow throughout different industries.

The Outcome

The top 7 rental companies in the UK use the MachineMax platform as an added value service to sell on to their customer base. These companies account for about 70% of all rentals on large scale infrastructural construction jobs in the UK - the likes of HS2 and Highways England.

We are currently working on nuances for different product needs based on nuanced operating models identified in the US market. We are also working to expand the UK product across Europe with specific focus on HGV dealers - you can read more about that here .

Murphy will be investing £75m over the next 5 years in state of the art environmentally conscious Plant equipment as part of our commitment to reduce our emissions by 50% to coincide with our 75 year anniversary. Partnering with forward thinking companies like MachineMax will enable us to monitor our equipment centrally and help drive down emissions, reduce idling, minimise down-time and increase productivity
— Mike Carpenter – Managing Director, Murphy
The team at Murphy Plant are incredibly hands on and very passionate about driving change within the industry. Access to useful and usable data is the key driver for improving productive and efficient use of machinery. Together Murphy Plant and MachineMax are enabling this for all customers of Murphy Plant. Data integrations can be complex however it’s an integral process when enabling a single platform to track them all and with the great work of Brendan, Damien, and Brian, we are ready to drive forward the next phase.
